Mistake Counter

The Mistake Counter is the number of different mistake categories flagged in your current range. Fewer is better, and each category opens its own trades.

How it's calculated#

Mistake Counter=∣{ m:at least one trade in range is flagged m }∣\text{Mistake Counter} = \left|\left\{\, m : \text{at least one trade in range is flagged } m \,\right\}\right|
m
A mistake category: a detected one (Impulsive, Revenge Trade, Oversized Position and the rest) or a custom label you added.
range
The period and filters currently applied on the board.

Each category counts once, however many trades carry it. Two custom labels that differ only in capitals or spacing are the same category: "late exit" and "Late Exit" merge. Two retired categories never count: FOMO, which is now an emotion you tag, and an old size check that the new Oversized Position rule replaced.

The count sits next to a second number that answers a different question. MISTAKE TRADES shows how many trades carry at least one mistake, out of all trades in the range.

Worked example#

This month you have 40 trades. Nine carry mistakes:

CategoryTrades
Revenge Trade3
Oversized Position4
Late Exit (your own label)2

The Mistake Counter is 3. MISTAKE TRADES reads 9 / 40, assuming no trade carries two of them. Suppose the nine trades net −€860 and their losers alone come to −€1,120. The board's headline then reads "3 habits. −€1,120." The euro figure there is the losses-only COST, explained on Mistake Cost.

When it shows "—"#

The counter itself is never blank: with nothing flagged it is zero, and the board says "Nothing flagged in this slice." The tiles beside it show "—" when there is nothing to put in them, for example MOST EXPENSIVE when no category lost money net.

Some detectors need data before they can fire. Cut Winner Early needs a target. Under-Conviction Size needs a planned size, or enough trades in the prior 30 days to know your usual size.

Both also need the trade linked to a playbook that has risk parameters. A low count on thin records can mean "not checked", not "clean". The full list of what each detector needs is on mistake detectors.

What's a good mistake counter?#

Fewer is better, and zero is the goal. In practice, watch the direction more than the level: one category that keeps reappearing week after week is a habit, while a category that appears once is an incident. Each category card on the Mistakes board shows its own TREND (▲ IMPROVING, ▼ WORSENING or — FLAT), comparing the recent half of the days it appeared on with the earlier half.

How to improve it#

  1. Work one category at a time. Pick the card marked FIX FIRST and leave the rest until it fades. See rank mistakes by cost.
  2. Turn it into a playbook rule from the card's MAKE IT A RULE action. See add a rule to a playbook.
  3. Cut impulsive trades first. A trade with no playbook is flagged Impulsive every time, so it inflates the count fast. See impulsive trades.

Where you'll see it#

  • Analytics › Mistakes (/analytics/mistakes): the headline ("3 habits. −€1,120."), the CATEGORIES cards, grouped under Risk, Process, Emotional and Conviction. Click a card to list its trades. See the Analytics guide.
  • Dashboard: the Discipline card lists your top three mistake labels with their trade counts, next to your impulsive-trade count. See the Dashboard guide.
  • Trade Log: filter by any mistake to see the same trades. See filter and search.

Frequently asked questions#

Does the mistake counter count trades or mistakes?#

Categories. If revenge trades show up ten times this month, that is one category on the counter. To see how many trades carry a mistake, read the MISTAKE TRADES tile next to it, which shows flagged trades out of all trades in the range. Each category card shows its own trade count and net P&L.

Why are mistakes grouped into Risk, Process, Emotional and Conviction?#

The groups keep two opposite messages apart. The Risk Score gives full marks for sizing down, while the Under-Conviction Size mistake flags backing off your own size. Side by side, the screen would say sizing down is both good and bad. So risk and conviction mistakes always sit at opposite ends, each under its own header.

Do my custom mistakes count toward the mistake counter?#

Yes. Every custom label you add in a trade's MISTAKES field is its own category, on every plan. Labels that differ only in capitals or spacing merge into one. Any other difference makes a new category, so "late exit" and "exited late" count twice. Keep your wording consistent so one habit doesn't split into several.

Is zero mistakes a realistic goal?#

Zero in a given week is realistic. Detectors fire only on specific, checkable rules, and you control what you flag yourself. A long streak at zero is worth a second look, though: some detectors need a planned size or a target to check anything. Make sure your trades carry those before you read a clean board as a clean month.
